Conservatories & Orangeries

Edwardian conservatories were named after the then reigning King Edward (also known as Georgian conservatories). They are usually square or rectangular in design reflected throughout the conservatory including the roof. The design is simple and has less detailing than other period types. The benefit is to allow a more unobtrusive view when looking out and will unlikely to have decorative glass panels. A feature of Edwardian conservatories is the presence of several top rectangular or square windows installed in the profile.

A gable front conservatory has a roof front end that goes vertical up to an apex rather than sloping towards the centre. This is usually shaped in align to the gable end of the house, hence the name. The gable front end conservatories are made up of angular lines and can be optioned with Georgian bars, decorative glass panels or thick polycarbonate layers.

Traditional Lean To conservatories are the simplest form of uPVC extensions that offer clean lines for a modern appearance for houses nowadays. They are often referred to as Mediterranean sunrooms and are ideal for those who have restricted area for a full-sized conservatory. The ‘lean to’ reference is from the shallower roof pitch which leans onto the property it is installed on. The pitch of the roof can vary according to the type of property, for example a fairly shallow top would suit a bungalow, whereas a steeper pitch would be ideal for a terraced house. Both, offer good natural light into the conservatory and makes the most of the space available.

P shaped conservatories are better for big detached houses where it can join a three or five sided Victorian style conservatory to a Lean To conservatory. It is considered as a versatile design with the ability to extend in various directions and to create separate living spaces. Some designs can combine a mix of Georgian features and add a fancy ridge to the roof, all to produce a much needed extension to the home whilst adding grandeur to the property.

T shaped conservatory are recognised by a main prominent section which is either Victorian, Edwardian or Gable Front in design. With a T shape to the floor space, it provides a striking part of the house to lead out into the garden or back to the house with a notable porch style entrance.

L shaped conservatory is identified by the union of a Georgian or Edwardian style conservatory to a Lean To type. It offers multiple living areas to utilise for different purposes and can be fitted cleverly to the house so that the space is maximise to suit your needs without extending too far into the garden.

An orangery combines both the style and light of a conservatory with the warmth and practicalities of an extension. The brickwork can be reduced where more natural light is a necessity but generally a conservatory has none or minimal brickwork in comparison. This higher level of wall barrier offers orangery users much more privacy in return and succeeds in fashioning a higher safety factor. It is also likely to incorporate a lantern style roof connected to a flat part rather than straight to the side frames seen in conservatories.
